Out with the old.
As a fashion student or girl in general it seems to be very difficult to let go of any clothing article. There always seems to be a back story behind the garment or a possibility to wear it again. During quarantine I began to sell my clothing on depop, this is a selling and purchasing platform that connects individuals from all over the world.
During my time in the house alone I began to get rid of most of the clothes in my closet. Through this, I gained insight into second-hand selling and understanding pricing based on the current trends within the market. Items that were trendy before I sold them were dropped in value such as thrasher sweatshirts and platform vans.
Additionally, I gained negotiation knowledge and learned that lowballing is a great tactic to see exactly where the seller's mindset is. When desperate to get rid of something you would be very surprised at what someone will knock down their price too.
This overall pushed me to gather peers and sell clothing in Monroe Park a common area for Virginia Commonwealth University students. We chose a spot in which was near the center, an area in which all the parks paths connected. My peers and I then laid out our clothing to visually entice students or community members who passed by. We incorporated trendy radio music to also invite customers over.
While selling the product I often told students reasonable prices between the range of $3-$40 depending on the item and its original price point. I even allowed customers to try on garments such as corsets or jackets to establish customer loyalty for the next time I sell at the park.
